Yes, you can begin to build a town near Diersvill, or vice versa almost opposite the hospital, there is a good brick house, is a little patch beat spikes and will fit perfectly to the base, well, or in the hospital, I was on the roof of the build.
There is an option in the same place near the city built on water, but this is the easiest and fair way for zombies just go under the water and all that is on your base will be afloat, and zombie attacks will not be.
Gotcha, I've spent 2 days at my house hunting and gathering some materials. Should I head straight for the hospital or set up shop near Diersvill and work my way there before day 7?
Last edited by Reytholian ; 30 Nov, 6: There are a few ways to play the game. I am in the camp of making my own base instead of basing in a prefab, given many multiplayer servers reserving prefabs for looting instead of basing.
Although it's fine if you want to base in a prefab, my advice is from a base building perspective. I'm no expert, but I've learned a lot on PvE servers and am looking forward to a single player run again, so here are my steps: When I spawn, I will decide which material I am going to use, adobe or cobblestone.
I am going to need clay as a given either way, marked by brown spots on the map. So, given that, here is what I make for a base Stage 1: I'll make a 6 high pillar, put 5 ladders on it, and as sturdy a hatch as I can muster on the 6th block, maybe wood, hopefully scrap though.
To get on top of the hatch and the 6th block, climb as high as the ladder can take you, and close the hatch. You can then climb up or down to stop clipping through the hatch. You want to go up obviously.
That is my take on a basic Nerd Pole base. I put arrow slits, flat side down, around the edges so spiders can't come up, and ranged zombies can't hit me.
I can still hit them with the bow. Simple wood for now, have to be economical for now, can always upgrade later. It should be able to support a walk around the top of the nerd pole and the hatch.
I make sure the door, or should I say, inner door, is rotated on the blocks so it is flush with the exit. I then rotate a second door so it is flush with the exit on the first outside block, allowing for a double door.
Although, zombies may dance on top of the outer door frame occasionally, this isnt a huge issue. I might refine the design to add a couple plates on top to block them, or maybe even a superfluous door to nowhere just to occupy the lip they jump on, but that part is unimportant.
You now have a classic midieval tower complete with classic midieval murder holes essentially downward facing arrow slits Stage 4: I break the bottom tile of the ladder, dig down 3 tiles, dig out the ground beneath the door it will be held up by the two pillars that go down to bedrock next to it.
When you are done, dig out the 2 blocks directly underneath the new block supporting the door above. Stand in that alcove, add a hatch to where the bottom of the ladder used to be, and add ladders under the hatch.
Then stand under the hatch again so you can place a door under the foundation block your entrance door rests on. As long as the doors are in tact, everything above them is supported as if it's a pillar by the way, so if you ever dig under a load bearing wall, remember to place a door frame.
This is where you get a place to put your stuff. I like to dig a little square two squares out from the load bearing walls of the tower, with arrow slits on the left and right of the bottom of the ladder with the flat parts facing the ladder this time, so if you get stuck in the basement instead of being able to flee to the roof, you can try and keep the door repaired or should I say doors, if you wisely build double doors again and shoot the intruders who are wrecking your ladders through the arrow slits.
I will generally replace any and all tiles eventually with player made tiles, since most player made tiles that are unique to the player and not found in the world don't spawn zombies, as I understand it.
It's your own little hobbit hole. If you want to be as crazy as me, you can replace the roof with arrow slits to shoot zombies banging on your front door from below lets the rain in though, but also lets you grow crops underground cause it lets in light!
That's a bit more advanced though Don't delete your roof by growing corn through it, it will eat blocks up to 4 tiles above the soil it was planted on I learned this the hard way This is where you start to get serious about keeping the zombies out, and establishing more territory above ground.
What I do is, take note of the tiles around your hollowed out hobbit hole. Build 50 width pillars on those tiles, I forget the proper name, just type 50 into the build menu, it should show up.
Just beware, zombies who die on those tiles should be looted pronto, their decayed version of their corpse, zombie remains, tend to get eaten if they die on a pillar tile.
This will take awhile, but at least you have your "core" base to defend from as you do it. When you finish the wall of pillars extending around your base, extend your arrow slit roof so it connects your tower to the pillars, so it makes a sort of "cage" and then you can extend it a couple of more blocks from the pillars, so there are 2 blocks of arrow slits extending from the poles.
I like to then make a ramp with as many block of a jump as you feel comfortable with to get onto the roof as an entrance. I usually choose a flat block at the top of the ramp, 1 below where I want to jump to, and 2 away, so zombies have a hard time jumping across, they surprise me sometimes.
And also destroy the Bottom part of the ladder to the roof, and place a hatch at the top of the ladder. Ideally turn it so it opens from left to right, as it makes it easier to climb up from.
Depending almost entirely on luck, you will have hopefully at least got some basic stuff, so if you had anything stored at your first base you want to keep, go back and retrieve it at the beginning of day 3.
And possibly leave some stuff as a makeshift second base to fall back on if shit hits the fan at some point. Either way, you will now be putting more time into the town rooftop base, as it is closer to any goods you may need, and will be more efficient, while maintaining a level of safety which makes it perfectly viable.
During this time you should be getting wood. Oh you will need so, so much wood, you practically cannot have too much. I recommend spending the remainder of day 3 getting just wood logs, if the town you are in is in the right type of biome, trees will be more abundant, and if you're in a desert still, it's time to venture as far as possible to get some trees, because bottom line, you need logs for wood log spikes in order to fortify your base at the bottom.
Your base well fortified with doors in place, and spikes surrounding it. Each of these upgrade tools get faster to upgrade blocks and spikes respectively. A safe escape route.
I find it best to build a couple of small pillars away from the base of the building by 2 blocks. If shit does happen to hit the proverbial fan, then jump to one and then the other, lower one and make your escape on foot.
Be sure to have some form of alcohol, preferably Beer or, the better choice, Grain alcohol, which allow you to run for longer without losing stamina. But be careful not to drink too much 2 max at once for beer, and 1 max at once for grain alcohol, or you will actually run slower from becoming Drunk.
Number 1 thing to be careful of is Dogs. If you see one, run. Don't think, just run like a little bitch. The only exception is if you have been fortunate while looting to find a functioning gun, Lucky enough to find a Forge ahead book and have therefore created a crossbow, or are extremely confident in your ability to take them down with the bow while running.
But otherwise, spend as much of this time upgrading your wood log spikes with scrap metal. Scrap metal isn't as easy to come by as it used to be, but it's not impossible either.
Probably the easiest, if you have a pickaxe, is to scrap all the metal shelving you have in the ground floor of the shop you're living in. It wont yield massive amounts like it used to, but it's a good start.
If you don't have a pickaxe, because forge ahead books are a bastard to get now, or you were unlucky and didn't find one in a tool store, then there are other ways. Perhaps the best way is to find a scrap metal shed, there's normally at least one in most medium sized towns, so they're not exactly rare.
Other good places to find scrap metal are from: Taken from my Scrap Metal Guide which does go on the basis you have a good pickaxe. If you still don't have a pickaxe, then using a stone axe is still viable, but pray to the gods of RNG, that you find something better in some junk somewhere.
Houses, Shops, stores etc. Found in the "Blasted Lands biome", I think that's the correct name for the biome, like the one in the main city at 0,0 co-ordinates.
But also around the "dump" areas in towns, which are often surrounded by a fence. Primarily found in the office areas of houses on the second floor, or in the basement of houses with a gun chest. The roof fortified with a lip of upgraded wood frames so climbing zombies cannot reach you from below.
If you have all this, then you are pretty much guaranteed to survive the first 7 th. It may be weeks before you find everything you need to make a base of your own, primarily because of the forge ahead book rarity now.
But if you keep moving from town to town, searching for only book stores, it shouldn't take too long. But do remember books can be found in houses too, most houses have at least one bookshelf, either downstairs or upstairs, but not in the basements.
By the end of searching every house in your town, you are likely to have found most recipes you need. From here you should be able to make it on your own, But coming up soon will be my base building guide for days Since you only get one waypoint, I don't like this.
It results in you using the bed marker and your waypoint marker redundantly. Instead, I built a tall wooden structure around the opening so I would be certainly able to see it when I approach the vicinity.
Great tips, and thanks for posting more. It took me a couple of hours to write this thing, and because of the text limit on posts, i had to omit some parts. As well as trying to make it as comprehensive as possible.
Hopefully that balance shows, as a basic guide for people to follow. Also of note, using wood frames as fuel for campfires and forges seems to be the most bang for your buck. Yet 1 wood log makes 2 wooden frames, and wooden frames burn for 2: Much better to make wood spikes if you are reduced to using wood for fuel.
The heat map gets updated each time an item of fuel is used As well as small bushes. I always hear of people dying 5 or more times before day 7, and thought I'd share my experience with others in hopes it does help.
I would recommend you break down all metal into 4 scrap metal and make a reinforced club as an initial zombie defense weapon. Every two small metal objects makes a scrap.
Bows are better for early game, they are effective and it's too risky to melee since you can get stun killed. I believe the crossbow is also now held behind a book barrier, so just wanted to make it clear that you need more than a Forge Ahead book now.
Also I know you stressed it a lot that knowledge is power in this game, and it is wonderful that you have, but if I were you I would even throw in one last "raid all the bookshelves ever" bit lol and once you can craft shotgun shells and have a shotgun all that paper from the books you get from shelves that aren't readable will come in quite handy.
Another thing is, because of the amazing crossbow being locked behind a book now, I have used some other weapons I didn't use to before and I have to say, the blunderbuss once you are able to craft an orange one at least is quite good if you wait until the absolutely last second and get a head shot, I have been pleasantly surprised to see.
I agree with just about everything you said and this should definitely help people struggling on the first couple of nights. If you have a friend on your server it is infinitely nicer too because jobs can be split up ie one mines and one hunts or one builds and one forages and it increases your survival efforts tremendously if you two are coordinated.
PS - no matter what stage in the game you are, if you find a purple small engine or even a blue one for that matter guard that thing with your life and make sure it is protected at all times and cradle it at night and sing it lullabies because once you have enough resources to craft a minibike, you will fly though the map with that thing and you will be SO happy you saved it.

In the likely case that you spawn in a desert biome, use your stone axe to harvest several of the tall cacti; their fruit is juicy and will help with thirst and hunger. Great early game food.
Campsites are everywhere - loot them! There will be sleeping bags, back packs, food coolers, hollow stumps, cooking pots, and more! Not only that, but if you chop at the tents, you'll get enough cloth to last for the next few weeks.
You can either take out the small horde that hangs around and then make use of the camp fire that's there, or you can just lead them away and double back, quickly looting what you can.
After the basics, my first priority isn't finding a town, it's finding a woodland biome. Once there, I search until I find the type of cabin with an all stone bottom not the kind with a balcony around the whole thing - they have forges in them!
Once secured, take your stone axe to as many boulders as you can find, to obtain their sweet, sweet iron fragments. After boulders, you should have enough metal once smelted to make at least an axe, with a couple ingots left over.
I have a specific way of fortifying the forge cabins, but that's probably not important. From this point, I pretty much focus on what's in the above guide other than also keeping an eye out for caves.
Thanks for adding these. As i mentioned above it took a while to write this, and had to leave some stuff out. They do, unless you have a sleeping bag placed. I usually put mine on the roof, which requires a bit of redecorating, but it's worth it.

Want to add to the discussion? One of the first things any new player should craft when they have the chance is a handful of wood frames. They're expensive in early game 8 planks each but for sheer versatility they cannot be matched.
You can stair-step up the side of a building, plug holes, frame out roofs so spiders can't climb up to get you, erect crude weak barricades to slow zombies or make them make noise destroying the frame that can alert you to their presence great when you're trying to bust open a safe, nerdpole, bridge gaps, even let you ride out a night out in the open dig a hole straight down and set a frame or two over your head to plug the hole.
And all of this usefulness doesn't require upgrading them into "permanent" blocks, so you can grab 'em and reuse when you're done. If you have a decent ranged weapon e. Just be careful to not let your stamina drain completely or get stuck on terrain as either will give the bear a chance to catch you.
They move faster than you walk but slower than you run. Water towers are actually full of water, which can be handy if you're in a desert and can't find any small pools. Nerdpole or stair-step up with wood frames, knock open the top of the tower, and there you go.
In A11 you could set up shop at the top of a three-story brick shop building, remove F1-F2 the stairs, and basically be invulnerable, but in A12 the zombies will gradually destroy structures if they detect you but can't path to you.
They'll attack random structural components in the vicinity if their pathfinding code can't resolve a route to you. You don't want to ride a collapsing building down to ground level, and especially not if there's a feral horde at the bottom.
Be careful with spike traps - you can get stunlocked on them and die pretty quickly.

If you stand next to your tower in the cage, zombies cant hit you unless they break the cage, so you can just go next to the tower, step forward to stab em in the face with a bone shive or whack em with a club, then step back.
I do that all night every horde night, along with shooting em with crossbow, and the tougher ones with bullets of course, looting all the while. I have a loot chest way up on the side of the tower on one of the sides in case I loot too much.
Be careful as some areas will still be dark enough to allow zombies to run. On your map the camp will be displayed with a little tent so you won't lose track. This article may require cleanup.

Try to make your first shelter as small as possible so that you can still place a Secure Storage Chest and Camp Fire inside while you shelter from the night or weather. Do not forget to craft a Secure Wood Door, these can be locked to help prevent players in Survival MP just walking into your shelter and stealing your supplies.
Although it is tempting to save your cooking and crafting for night, be sure to conserve activity and light to avoid curious guests. Find an existing building As you move about, instead of building your own shelter, try and locate an existing building such as a burnt cabin or a metal shed.
These structures save you considerable amounts of time and resources if you can find one, and tend to offer more overall protection on your first night.
If you locate one such place of interest, make sure to use your Stone Axe to fortify any windows, doors and walls that look weak. Zombies will happily jump onto a window sill and smash inside as these are the weakest points.
With any extra Wood you may have, craft some Wood Spikes and place them around the exterior of your new shelter. This will weaken and slow down zombies, maybe even crippling them into a crawl! Much easier to deal with that way.
Keep in mind, however, that over the long term, prefabricated buildings offer much less protection than a player-built base. After the first couple of nights, you should begin building a base nearby to move into once complete.
Try to avoid bunkering down in a town. Zombies will spawn more spread out here, but they are much more plentiful, and make trips outside the player's base hazardous.
