However, the Mate 8 is sometimes marginally faster in physics calculations in 3DMark. Huawei's P9 has quite a lot to offer in terms of connectivity, but also has some gaps.

Though cheap, it lags behind competitors

In addition to diverse settings, it supports photos in DNG format. The update intervals of localization are slightly too long and lack some accuracy. Overall, the P9 has good endurance. The sound is recorded in stereo quality and makes a good impression. Two workdays without recharging are quite easily possible in practice. Power Consumption The high standby consumption rate shocked us at first.

What’s It Good At?

In total, the casing makes a high-quality and solid impression. The P9 offers a very good call quality and decent background noise suppression. It was worthwhile to take this unusual approach and reconfigure the almost forgotten smartphone with a better screen, good battery life, and a considerable performance boost. It can now be used in video mode also, but reduces the recording quality to p as opposed to p that is possible in the standard mode. At first glance, the system makes a somewhat fragmented impression due to the small font size, but this can be changed in the settings and the text then becomes legible also for users with weaker eyesight. In addition to a quick start guide and the mandatory safety instructions, Huawei's P9 comes with a modular Quick Charger with a nominal output of 10 watts 5 volts, 2 amperes. 17.02.2018 - Hopefully, these features will be added via an update. In addition to diverse settings, it supports photos in DNG format. The viewing angles are very good; the images on the screen are still very clear even from a very flat angle. The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers. Image Comparison Choose a scene and navigate within the first image. 23.03.2018 - The practical impression is confirmed: The detection accuracy and speed have been improved. A highlight is certainly the fingerprint scanner. The new showcase smartphone is even higher quality and the battery is also larger. The screen unlocks within fractions of a second after touching the area on the smartphone's back.

We compare the latest P8 lite with its predecessor alongside three other mid-range models: Our review sample's design looks very organic thanks to the 2. The glossy glass back looks stylish and, like the front, it is difficult to keep clean: Fingerprints and dust accumulate quickly.

Furthermore, the smartphone slides on even slightly slanted surfaces and could fall from a table accidentally. The smartphone is available in black, gold, and white.

A blue model is mentioned on the website, but it does not seem to be available in Europe. Huawei's P8 lite has a slightly bigger screen of 5. We still measured 7.

Pressure on the screen is visible in the liquid crystals for a moment, but it does not leave prolonged pressure marks. The handset easily defies pressure on the back. Huawei's P8 lite can be warped slightly, which produces quiet cracking noises.

In total, the casing makes a high-quality and solid impression. The selected glass and metal materials correspond to the category standard. Are you a loyal reader of notebookcheck? Are you a techie who knows how to write?

Then join our Team! However, some smartphones offer even higher storage capacities in this category. Apps can be moved to the SD card although Huawei takes a different approach than some other manufacturers: Either the internal storage or the micro-SD card is selected as the standard storage.

When the SD card is selected, data from compatible apps are moved to the SD card automatically and future apps, photos, and data are stored there. App2SD does not have to selected for every individual app.

The card cannot be formatted as internal storage, and thus it can still be used with other devices. Huawei's Emotion UI 5 visibly modifies the looks of Android 7, but it is a bit more flexible than Google's stock Android: For example, the user can launch "Basic Mode" that facilitates use when large icons or only few functions are needed.

It is also possible to decide whether all apps are displayed on the home screen or whether app drawers are used and arranged like the menu buttons. At first glance, the system makes a somewhat fragmented impression due to the small font size, but this can be changed in the settings and the text then becomes legible also for users with weaker eyesight.

However, some app labels are cut off under the icon. Thanks to the preloaded "HiCare" app, it is possible to quickly access Huawei's service offers or open instructions concerning the smartphone.

Useful tools, such as a compass or file manager, are found in the tool folder. However, some affiliate apps, such as "Gameloft", "TripAdvisor", and "Twitter", are also preloaded.

The reception within a rural area was usually good: We also usually had four of five bars indoors in the well-developed German Vodafone network. Conveniently, SIM cards can be inserted and removed on the fly.

The Wi-Fi standards are limited: Consequently, the less-frequented 5-GHz band cannot be used. Our review sample delivers acceptable though not outstanding Wi-Fi transmission rates, as we discovered in our standardized Wi-Fi test.

HTC's One A9s, for example, offers twice the speed. The reception near the router was good in practice; websites opened relatively fast. We performed our practical tracking test, where we take the smartphone and a professional navigation system by Garmin, by car this time.

We compared the outcomes of both devices with the "Runtastic" app. The GPS module in Huawei's smartphone sometimes takes shortcuts when it loses the signal between two measuring points, but Garmin's Edge navigation system does this, too.

Huawei's module is even a bit better than the professional device on serpentine streets. In total, it is an impressive outcome for a GPS module in a mid-range smartphone.

Consequently, the tracker can also be used for more demanding excursions. Huawei has actually reworked the phone app. However, it basically supports the same functions as Google's stock app.

We liked the fact that the call list can be filtered according to categories, such as missed or unknown. The harassment filter is also a convenient tool for warding off unwanted calls.

The earpiece can get quite loud, but the higher its volume the less clear it becomes and it then starts to roar. We liked it most at medium volume although the call quality was also only mediocre then.

The microphone had problems recording quiet voices and we also sounded muffled to our contact. Our contact sounded relatively good in hands-free mode, and the microphone can even record quieter speech.

However, we still sounded a bit muffled to our contact. Huawei offers even fewer megapixels in its P8 lite primary camera than in its predecessor: However, this is not necessarily a step backward as Huawei relies on extra big pixels of 1.

The autofocus also responds particularly quickly. We can confirm that the camera shoots well-exposed photos that still depict depth in both dark and bright areas, which is not a bad outcome. The outlines could be sharper; an intentionally blurred background often looks artificial.

Subjectively, the primary camera definitely takes good photos for a mid-range smartphone in total. Videos can be recorded in p at 30 frames per second with the rear-facing camera. The exposure here is very good and adapts quickly to changing light conditions.

The image sharpness is also good, and we quite like the results in total. The user has to take particular care not to cover the camera with a finger when holding the smartphone due to its position in the upper left corner.

However, the photos are rather mediocre with visible color noise, bright areas quickly look overexposed, and they do not really look sharp. It should be acceptable for an occasional selfie, but it is not enough for really high-quality photos.

Choose a scene and navigate within the first image. One click changes the position on touchscreens. One click on the zoomed-in image opens the original in a new window. The first image shows the scaled photograph of the test device.

The analysis of the rear-facing camera also delivered good results under defined light conditions in our photo studio. Colored surfaces look relatively homogeneous and not too grainy.

However, the sharpness decreases slightly toward the edges. The sharpness is good in the image center. Colors are reproduced well, but most tones are a bit too light compared to the reference color space.

A cabled headset is also included. Special accessories are not found on Huawei's website. Huawei offers the month manufacturer's warranty in the EU. Huawei preloads the third-party keyboard app "SwiftKey".

Although it offers many configuration options, it is not very well-arranged since the keys often have multiple assignments. In return, the individual letters and numbers are mapped on large buttons.

Voice input, swipe and a dictionary are also present. The touchscreen has a very sleek surface and is thus very slippery. Whether or not the user likes it is a matter of taste. In any case, the touchscreen is very accurate and functions very precisely even in the corners.

The menu keys are displayed on the screen. The volume control and standby button are on the casing's right as expected. A highlight is certainly the fingerprint scanner. Although it has become standard in this price range, the fingerprint scanner in Huawei's P8 lite is extremely fast and accurate.

The screen unlocks within fractions of a second after touching the area on the smartphone's back. The IPS panel has a 5. The illumination of 91 percent is also very homogeneous, and thus colored surfaces look evenly bright.

If PWM was detected, an average of minimum: Although the black level of 0. Dark areas have a light grayish tint. The contrast ratio of The screen has a blue filter mode that reduces eyestrain.

This is achieved via the white balance that can also be readjusted manually. This is recommended since the image looks very yellowish otherwise. We examine the image reproduction ex-factory, and in the cool and warm white balance with the CalMAN software and spectrophotometer.

A color tint is always present; the white balance only changes the color. The tint is green in a very warm white balance and blue in a very cool setting.

The default setting exhibits the lowest color deviations compared to the sRGB color space. Depending on the setting, the sRGB color space is covered from This will be too little for professionals especially since the color tint cannot be completely eliminated.

Normal users should not depend too much on the screen's colors, either. The screen's very high maximum brightness allows using the smartphone outdoors on brighter days. The power button is slightly roughened for discerning it with a finger.

The controls are incorporated firmly in the casing and they make a high-quality impression. A notification LED is situated behind the earpiece. Unfortunately, it can only be turned on and off in the settings; it cannot be configured otherwise.

The P series now receives a fingerprint scanner with the launch of the P9. It can be used for pulling down the notification bar, to scroll through the gallery or as camera release. The detection accuracy and speed have been improved.

Unlike the level 2 scanner in the Mate S, a level 4 module is now installed in the P9. Apparently, it uses a three dimensional image of the fingerprint. The scanner functioned reliably and very fast in practice.

The screen in Huawei's P9 has a size of 5. The Chinese manufacturer still holds tight to the Full HD resolution, but has announced that they will install higher resolution screens in future due to VR we reported.

The decision is quite reasonable, but the current resolution is perfectly adequate for all other tasks and achieves a decent pixel density of PPI. Unfortunately, this affects the black value slightly and it remains just below 0.

Although this is still a good outcome, overall, the screen's contrast lags slightly behind the P8's panel. The measured rates do not change when the ambient light sensor is enabled or when evenly distributing bright and dark areas over the screen.

We did not observe clouding on our review sample even in absolute darkness. The P9 Plus is delivered with a 5. We used our photospectrometer and CalMAN analysis software for checking the color reproduction accuracy.

Aberrations from the reference colors are particularly visible in the standard settings. The grayscale levels display a bluish tint, and some deviation is also seen in mixed colors.

The warm color setting is most accurate, should precision be needed. However, this will annoy very few users since it is an issue of fine color differences. Fortunately, the color space coverage is very wide.

Huawei's P9 does a good job outdoors. It benefits from its very high brightness and a strong contrast ratio. If PWM was detected, an average of minimum: Some brightness is lost starting at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, but not more.

We did not observe color inverting or ghosting. The strongest SoC that the Chinese company's in-house chip maker can provide is installed in Huawei's P9: Only the Cortex A72 cluster clocks approximately MHz faster.

The benchmarks reveal several small surprises. Secondly, apparently the P9 cannot completely retrieve the SoC's extra power. However, the latter is more of a GPU-intensive benchmark so that this is not as remarkable.

However, the Mate 8 is sometimes marginally faster in physics calculations in 3DMark. The P9 probably has difficulties in dealing with the additional heat in a tight space, and thus its faster SoC does not bring any advantages.

As PCMark confirms, the system performance is very good. Barely any lags are noticed subjectively; at most when a demanding app had just been closed. Google's Chrome is the standard preloaded browser.

In conjunction with Huawei's P9, it delivers a very good browsing performance. Internet browsing is fast in everyday use. Its speed is very good and shines in sequential data read among other things.

This is also reflected when reading small data blocks. The P9 only scores averagely in writing large data blocks, but it looks better with small blocks and even outperforms the S7.

The P9 offers a comparatively slow slot for a premium handset. This is also probably why the camera's DNG data cannot be directly saved on the micro-SD card, but is always stored in the internal storage first.

Currently, there is no game in the Play Store that pushes the P9 to its limits. As the benchmarks show, even demanding games like " Asphalt 8 " and " Dead Trigger 2 " run with high frame rates in the maximum detail level.

However, the FPS seems to be limited in the former, since the frame rate frequency is very consistent. The sensors or touchscreen handling do not give any reason for complaint.

However, the position of the speaker in landscape mode is not ideal for gaming since it is quickly covered by a hand. The idle surface temperatures are quite low. The rates climb up to Here, the Manhattan 3.

The SoC's performance consistently throttles after the third run. The lowest point is reached in the 18 th repetition. Huawei's P9 has a mono speaker situated beside the smartphone's USB port.

Thus, the handset can also be placed on a table without covering the speaker. The quality is quite decent in medium volume and even manages to render mids. The P9 reaches an acoustic pressure of up to Unfortunately, the components then tend to distort slightly as can be seen in the Pink Noise diagram.

The trebles in particular overdrive then. The included headset highly resembles Apple's Ear Pods, and is impressive with its balanced playback. Overall, the power consumption is on a good level.

Huawei's P9 primarily owes that to its frugality under load. The screen proves to be an energy-guzzler in idle mode. Perhaps Huawei can improve this section somewhat via an update. The smartphone supports Quick Charge.

The P9 is fully recharged in exactly two hours. The battery life can keep up well in the comparison field. The video playback times are also very good, but almost all rivals can offer more here.

Overall, the P9 has good endurance. The Chinese company continues the success story of its P series with the Huawei P9, and consistently develops its flagship further.

Once again, the great IPS panel, good performance, photo quality of the Leica dual-camera, the strong battery life and generous warranty period primarily impressed us. The components that Huawei has installed in its smartphone generally function well, but they are not always state-of-the-art.

For example, LTE Cat. However, it has a very wide frequency range. It is also pleasing that the phone qualities have not been neglected. The P9 offers a very good call quality and decent background noise suppression.

Huawei's P9 is a strong premium smartphone that does not need superlatives, and convinces with its balanced overall concept. In conjunction with the slim EMUI 4. The dual-camera is not the advertised reinvention of mobile photography, but it shoots good photos with a very unique flair.

On the other hand, the camera's video feature shows weaknesses. Even if Huawei has increased the price with its P9, the smartphone still offers a good price-performance ratio and a balanced overall package.

However, the handset will not entirely satisfy fans of VR glasses or video enthusiasts. See our Top 10 Notebooks: Audio, microphone, USB, speaker. The phone app in Huawei's P9 presents the familiar looks of other models.

Image Comparison Choose a scene and navigate within the first image. Scene 1 Scene 2 Scene 3 click to load images. Apple iPhone 6s Plus. The target color is displayed in the lower part of each patch.

Accessories In addition to a quick start guide and the mandatory safety instructions, Huawei's P9 comes with a modular Quick Charger with a nominal output of 10 watts 5 volts, 2 amperes.

Apparently, a free case is included when purchasing the handset in China. Warranty Huawei strongly believes in its handset and this is reflected in the warranty. Saturation Sweeps color temperature: AdobeRGB color space coverage: ProPhoto RGB color space coverage: In the sun left to right: Octane V2 JetStream 1.

Nevertheless, it has now been reworked with a new design, Full HD panel, and many other improvements. Our report reveals whether the P8 lite is a good deal. For the original German review, see here.

Almost two years later both smartphones are still being retailed. Not a bad performance in this fast-paced market. Perhaps Huawei has decided to introduce a successor of the mid-range model in the form of the P8 lite just for this reason.

The phones also look very different. We compare the latest P8 lite with its predecessor alongside three other mid-range models: Our review sample's design looks very organic thanks to the 2.

On the other hand, the latest Bluetooth 4. Furthermore, Wi-Fi Direct and Miracast are supported for transmitting data and videos. The small collection of preloaded games was rather annoying.

However, it can be completely deleted. Otherwise, the smartphone does not come with any bloatware. As well as a health app, the familiar phone manager for system maintenance is also present.

Little helpers, such as a mirror, flashlight, recorder, memo and backup app, are also preloaded. Huawei has released firmware version B 2. In addition, the new firmware also comes with the Quik app preloaded.

Fortunately, it can be uninstalled if necessary. The frequency coverage is very wide and should ensure good reception anywhere in the world. The manufacturer has installed three antennas in the casing for an even better reception, a feature no other smartphone currently has.

Therefore, it transmits in both the 2. Connecting was fast and easy. Simple contents, such as the user interface, were displayed correctly. However, when scrolling through the gallery it always took a moment before the next photo was loaded.

Although rendering a video via the connection functioned with sound, it stuttered very heavily. Some other handsets do a better job here. The reason for this is particularly evident in the area of the turning point.

The update intervals of localization are slightly too long and lack some accuracy. Nevertheless, the performance is enough for navigating by car or bike. The smartphone's call quality is compelling.

The callers' voices are transmitted clearly at both ends, and noise suppression also functions well. The background music was completely suppressed and no longer audible.

The speaker also impressed us. The P9 was placed on a table during the test calls, but we were always well understood. Noise suppression is not quite as good then, but it is still noticeable.

It still functions decently in low-light environment and has many features. It can now be used in video mode also, but reduces the recording quality to p as opposed to p that is possible in the standard mode.

The same is true for time lapse mode. The sound is recorded in stereo quality and makes a good impression. The self-proclaimed showpiece of Huawei's P9 is the 12 MP dual-camera max. It imports the flair of typical Leica photos in mobile photography.

The jointly-developed image algorithm is to provide better results, especially in low light conditions. Huawei even speaks of a new era of smartphone photography. The dual-camera has two different sensors.

Huawei has also expanded the camera's Pro mode. In addition to diverse settings, it supports photos in DNG format. However, the Live View mode does not function reliably in long exposure, which we had also observed in the Galaxy S7.

The daylight photo quality of Huawei's P9 appealed to us. Photos are very dynamic and sharp. Colors tend to look warmer and stronger, but this is not annoying. The opposite is true: It gives the photos a unique look.

The photos generally make a very high-contrast impression. The quality decreases in difficult light conditions, but the P9 still does a good job. The white balance in particular is better than those of the rivals; outlines remain clear and there is not as much image noise.

The recordings in 60 frames per second are visibly darker. Users who are happy with p at 30 FPS will be provided with a very good result. Unfortunately, it is not possible to record in Ultra HD, and special recording modes such as time lapse and slow-motion are only possible in p.

On the other hand, the recorded stereo sound is always really good. Choose a scene and navigate within the first image. One click changes the position on touchscreens.

One click on the zoomed-in image opens the original in a new window. The first image shows the scaled photograph of the test device. The camera's automatic mode is used and the photo is not edited afterwards.

The practical impression is confirmed: Colors are highly saturated and the white balance is rather too warm. We photographed our test chart under the same conditions.

The color sensor reproduces very sharp outlines and does not have any problems with color gradients. Light blurriness is only seen at the edges in maximum zoom, which is not uncommon.

In addition to a quick start guide and the mandatory safety instructions, Huawei's P9 comes with a modular Quick Charger with a nominal output of 10 watts 5 volts, 2 amperes. Besides the included in-ear headset, a data cable with a conventional USB Type-A on one end and Type-C on the other is also included in the box.

Huawei strongly believes in its handset and this is reflected in the warranty. That is a real statement in the smartphone sector and makes the smartphone also interesting to the business sector.

For this, the smartphone has to be connected to a free Huawei account. Huawei even tops that. The screen is replaced for free within the first three months of purchase in case of accidental damage.

The smartphone will also be replaced with a new handset within the first three months in case of hardware failures. The Corning Gorilla Glass surface of Huawei's P9 ensures superb gliding qualities on the touchscreen.

Inputs are implemented quickly and accurately. We did not notice any issues in the peripheral areas. An alternative layout can be downloaded from the Play Store if preferred.

Once again, the touchscreen supports inputting with a knuckle, which also functions reliably with some practice. Screenshots are created by tapping twice on the screen with a knuckle.

Creating full-length screenshots is a useful feature, as it conveniently allows capturing entire websites, for example. The physical buttons on the casing's right have a firm, short drop and function accurately.
