Huawei is making after Xiaomi decent smartphones the past years I don't know how you categorize the spectrum of the term "Propaganda", but, the OS and camera features aside, the company is on the verge of being sanctioned by US government for selling its products to North Korean regime which just became re-listed as a State Sponsor of Terrorism by US congress.

When I do make decisions about companies to boycott - the information generally comes from other sources. In some degrees, I agree. As long as you can buy a product legally from markets here in the US, I don't see why consumers should be discouraged to buy any product unless self-inspired.
It all depends on your viewpoint. There are plenty of US and British corporations who have been caught out selling equipment to countries around the world with similar reputations to North Korea, and usually those products are more directly lethal than telecommunications infrastructure hardware.
By all means, boycott companies who deal with such regimes, but if we were all to be consistent about such boycotts, we'd find it very difficult to buy much of anything. It is just incredible how Huawei managed to let the combined output of two sensors perform worse than competitors' mobile cameras sporting only one single sensor.
What a waste of resources. One would have expected a dual sensor setup to deliver twice as much SNR, half the noise and higher dynamic range, but they did't deliver. I was so excited about this promising dual sensor approach and anxious to read the reviews, now I am quite disappointed.
I truly hope that future iterations of the dual sensor concept will work better than that. That's more than half a stop of light I don't know how did you draw this conclusion: Yes Samsung S7 may appear sharper, with less noise in the sky's but if you side by side compare images, the Samsung images look more like sharpened - water color paintings because of the strong NR and sharpening applied to them.
If you compare the P9 image quality to the Iphone 6s, the Huawei is miles ahead in any department. So which one take better pictures than P9 in you opinion? I agree that the overall natural look of the pictures is very very pleasing.
The gamma curve is spot on and can be compared with larger sensors cameras thx to the wider dynamic range and without the unnatural HDR effect. It's a pity that 4K video wasn't implemented though.
The real life low light images why didn't you provide one Lars? I think, if you're testing the device, you should try and test it in any environment. Saying it didn't pick high ISO is kinda noobish can't think of other word.
There's some shots by David Guttenfelder in the latest National Geographic mag on a P9 and they flat out suck. I don't understand the point of cel phone cameras if they are taking us back to the dark ages of digital.
An interesting review that would more usefully be described in title as cell phone camera review as this is what it is. This may be too pedantic for some but mobile phones with a camera have stretched the definition of what a camera is.
Not so long ago the difference in language was very clear. I am also less and less convinced that cell phone cameras have made any fundamental real world improvements. Despite some the hype of being a compact camera killer, it is often overlooked that compacts have evolved at the same time.
There may be fewer models, but for example next to any of the 1 inch sensor models from Sony and cannon, or the Ricoh GR series cell phone cameras are poor quality and less flexible as a photographers tool.
You might say they have over time, become the cheap camera functionality wise compact they killed off. IMHO They have remained supreme in just one respect that they offer a the convenience of not having to carry a Compact.

That looks like a stitching artifact to me Huawei is a serious phone maker, manufacturing some of the best mobiles on the planet. I have no doubt they're doing what they say they're doing.
As to whether it makes a difference, that's up for debate. Would like to see comparative photos to see what the IQ difference might be. Not sure possible to turn off monochrome module or not.
Peisdf That is correct; there's a channel on YouTube that took pics with and without the monochrome camera lens covered and the pics were identical! It doesn't seem like the case.

The IQ from this phone's camera is actually pretty good for a smartphone camera. I'm impressed with the panoramas and the sharpness of the developed RAW images.
I personally wouldn't shell out the cash for it, but it really isn't that bad, honestly. Of course, I do wonder what the images would be like if it DID have a larger sensor Manufactors should do it right that way - bring it on, or just fade away.
The typical smartphone cam can never compete with an 1" sensor. Smartphones are not supposed to compete with 1" sensor cameras. Some of them have actually managed to pull off pretty good results with their small sensors.
Adobe Digital Negative DNG or manufactor-own RAW format is some kinda joke with these terrible small sensors, i wouldn't waste my time with a phone like that nowadays.

Adding RAW is a step in the wrong direction Hey, why not just put FF sensor in it? A bigger sensor means bigger camera module and bigger lens. Hence a thicker phone or a camera that sticks out the back of the phone.

Huawei is making after Xiaomi decent smartphones the past years I don't know how you categorize the spectrum of the term "Propaganda", but, the OS and camera features aside, the company is on the verge of being sanctioned by US government for selling its products to North Korean regime which just became re-listed as a State Sponsor of Terrorism by US congress.
I'm sure they make more than decent cellphones for affordable price. Speaking as an American, I buy what I want, because the ramifications of international politics seldom has any relationship to what the people are doing themselves mostly trying to make a living, like you.
When I do make decisions about companies to boycott - the information generally comes from other sources. In some degrees, I agree. As long as you can buy a product legally from markets here in the US, I don't see why consumers should be discouraged to buy any product unless self-inspired.
It all depends on your viewpoint. There are plenty of US and British corporations who have been caught out selling equipment to countries around the world with similar reputations to North Korea, and usually those products are more directly lethal than telecommunications infrastructure hardware.
By all means, boycott companies who deal with such regimes, but if we were all to be consistent about such boycotts, we'd find it very difficult to buy much of anything. It is just incredible how Huawei managed to let the combined output of two sensors perform worse than competitors' mobile cameras sporting only one single sensor.
What a waste of resources. One would have expected a dual sensor setup to deliver twice as much SNR, half the noise and higher dynamic range, but they did't deliver. I was so excited about this promising dual sensor approach and anxious to read the reviews, now I am quite disappointed.
I truly hope that future iterations of the dual sensor concept will work better than that. That's more than half a stop of light I don't know how did you draw this conclusion: Yes Samsung S7 may appear sharper, with less noise in the sky's but if you side by side compare images, the Samsung images look more like sharpened - water color paintings because of the strong NR and sharpening applied to them.
If you compare the P9 image quality to the Iphone 6s, the Huawei is miles ahead in any department. So which one take better pictures than P9 in you opinion? I agree that the overall natural look of the pictures is very very pleasing.
The gamma curve is spot on and can be compared with larger sensors cameras thx to the wider dynamic range and without the unnatural HDR effect. It's a pity that 4K video wasn't implemented though.
The real life low light images why didn't you provide one Lars? I think, if you're testing the device, you should try and test it in any environment. Saying it didn't pick high ISO is kinda noobish can't think of other word.
There's some shots by David Guttenfelder in the latest National Geographic mag on a P9 and they flat out suck. I don't understand the point of cel phone cameras if they are taking us back to the dark ages of digital.
An interesting review that would more usefully be described in title as cell phone camera review as this is what it is. This may be too pedantic for some but mobile phones with a camera have stretched the definition of what a camera is.
Not so long ago the difference in language was very clear. I am also less and less convinced that cell phone cameras have made any fundamental real world improvements.
Despite some the hype of being a compact camera killer, it is often overlooked that compacts have evolved at the same time. There may be fewer models, but for example next to any of the 1 inch sensor models from Sony and cannon, or the Ricoh GR series cell phone cameras are poor quality and less flexible as a photographers tool.
You might say they have over time, become the cheap camera functionality wise compact they killed off. IMHO They have remained supreme in just one respect that they offer a the convenience of not having to carry a Compact.
We reviewed the Mi5. A great little phone with Snap Q1 was the most powerful consumer mobile on the planet. Yep, Qualcomm's last chip had some heat issue's. And the stock suffered.

The P9 is a clear winner here. There is no way to proof if Huawei is doing what they said they are doing. All the image could just be from the color sensor with the monochrome info throw out.
Maybe someone can put filter on individual lenses and figure out if info from both cameras are really combined. If you take a closer look at the guy sitting on the side of the bridge to the right of the picture here - https: Not a "proof", but looks likely.
That looks like a stitching artifact to me Huawei is a serious phone maker, manufacturing some of the best mobiles on the planet. I have no doubt they're doing what they say they're doing.
As to whether it makes a difference, that's up for debate. Would like to see comparative photos to see what the IQ difference might be. Not sure possible to turn off monochrome module or not.
Peisdf That is correct; there's a channel on YouTube that took pics with and without the monochrome camera lens covered and the pics were identical! It doesn't seem like the case.
Don't know about the shortcomings of the P9, but pictures are very very nice. I'm gonna buck the developing trend here and actually say something positive about this phone. The IQ from this phone's camera is actually pretty good for a smartphone camera.
I'm impressed with the panoramas and the sharpness of the developed RAW images. I personally wouldn't shell out the cash for it, but it really isn't that bad, honestly. Of course, I do wonder what the images would be like if it DID have a larger sensor Manufactors should do it right that way - bring it on, or just fade away.
The typical smartphone cam can never compete with an 1" sensor. Smartphones are not supposed to compete with 1" sensor cameras. Some of them have actually managed to pull off pretty good results with their small sensors.
Adobe Digital Negative DNG or manufactor-own RAW format is some kinda joke with these terrible small sensors, i wouldn't waste my time with a phone like that nowadays.
Hope some brand would be wise enough like Panasonic and built-into a bigger sensor. IQ isn't good enough for my needs, that's it, simply. I agree sensors should be large.
Not for zoom of course, software trick is good but can not compete with the amazing mm and mm reach of Fuji's quality big glass. One of the main reasons people like phones is because they are cameras for dummies.

Adding RAW is a step in the wrong direction Hey, why not just put FF sensor in it? A bigger sensor means bigger camera module and bigger lens. Hence a thicker phone or a camera that sticks out the back of the phone.
Mike, I think you're all mixed up. Putting RAW is attractive for enthusiasts and pros. It certainly doesn't hurt to have it. If you don't want to use it, don't. To dismiss the Huawei P9's imager as 'just another smartphone camera' would be unfair.
