I got a full blown server at home part of my homelab dedicated to my media. I used to use a centralized headless Kodi with SQL server, where multiple other clients connected to it.

To me it was a mess. You loose the remote access and transcoding of Plex. All of my OTA recording goes straight to a Plex folder and is cataloged. Why do you need Kodi to share your local files?

No, I don't use it for gaming, only watching shows or YouTube. I had one and have the same opinion. For me, it was often slow and buggy. This was a good while ago though, so maybe a lot of it has been fixed with software updates.

The software has come a long way and that was the biggest issue in the beginning. Once they had that fixed, it's been working mostly flawlessly. After getting a Shield I moved it to a secondary TV where it's been working for the last year and a half or so.

My only issue is that the wifi on it is utter CRAP. It can't handle the higher bandwidth. The lack of app support and confirmed update support are really the only thing holding this thing back.

It's difficult to tell if the ones listed on ebay for around the same price shipped from overseas are in English. Might have to resort getting one using the same method to be safe. Someone on here has already taken delivery of one of these and they are the real deal. There is a slight typo in the title description Mi Box 3 but everything else checks out. The Mi Box does more than just Chromecasting.

Yes the Mi Box has an undocumented IR receiver. It works and does not need the Harmony remote to be pointed directly at the box. If you briefly press both the Power button and the Volume down button together on the Mi remote, you can take Screenshots.

This is what I found for Google Voice Search support: Have confirmed that Voice Search is Universal. Picks up results from Plex even if it's not running in the background. Good to see the Live Channels app is getting updates, haven't used it as much as I thought I would but definitely will once I get my other set wall mounted and put the NP behind it.

Plex streaming actually seems to be a better picture than off my xbox. Presto app installed but not tested yet. Not that I have long left with it anyway! So far the wireless seems to be very good though.

Casting a 4k vid sample from my phone on youtube seemed a little choppy in places but overall its finally nice to see my 4k tv doing something: For some reason the youtube app on my tv struggled with 4k samples.

The AUS power plug converter is a bit dodgy and I'm not really comfortable with using it. I've looked at Jaycar for a replacement power adaptor but I'm not sure if any of them are suitable.

The power adaptor that comes with it is 5. I can find 5VDC adaptors, but I thought the voltage had to be the same whereas the Amps can be variable so long as they are greater than the required.

Won't work with mine. The power adaptor has type C round plugs. I ended up buying a cheap travel adaptor from Bunnings to convert the C round plug to Aus. It's still slightly loose, but not as loose as the one that it shipped with, which felt like it would fall out at any time.

Might use the blutack method to make the fit a bit more snug. I've now got mine hooked up and tested a few things. Netflix plays in HD and Youtube does too. Although the lack of compatible Aus TV streaming apps is annoying, but casting from an iPad works well.

I've installed kodi and linked to my video files stored on my NAS, but I'll need to check the format of some of my video files. A couple were jittery and kept buffering. For instance Community s1 ep1 was jittery from the start, whereas Community s2 ep1 played fine.

Both were ripped and encoded using the same method. Only difference I can see is the s1 ep1 is 25fps and s2 ep1 is On a side note I've discovered that the 5Ghz wireless doesn't work on my modem router.

I had the cachemembuffersize set to, but that resulted in the "Cache Full: Cache filled before reaching required amount for continuous playback" message after about 20 seconds. I was testing using a Bluray rip with a bit rate of I then grabbed the USB to ethernet adaptor I use for the Windows 10 Tablet j5create jue if anyone's interested and plugged that into the the mi box.

It picked it up and assigned an IP address. It also disconnected the wireless so I didn't have to. So I reckon my home WiFi is a bit flakey where the mi box is located. Just make sure you set it to English Australia within Android settings.

As this thing is selling by the bucketload I have hope the issues will be resolved with updates and a proper root solution will be found. Everything played back smoothly when through the ethernet adaptor and no Cache full errors.

The examples given in this link can be copied to a plain text file called advancedsettings. When playing back a video through SPMC, and I press the back button, the video stops instead of going back to the video list with the current video playing in the background.

Anyone else experience this? For me this box has been excellent for my purposes since day one, since the first firmware update when first turning it on, there hasn't been any since, will be interesting to see how often updates roll out.

I reset my modem to factory and reconfigured from scratch and the 5GHz is still not working. I'm not going to worry about it for now and maybe just use the USB to Ethernet adaptor until my new modem arrives.

I had actually gone through that guide and at first set the cachemembuffersize to MB, but was getting the Cache Full errors. I then just did a copy and paste of the Example 4 and was still getting the Cache Full errors.

Kodi or SPMC, for your issue, it should make no difference, and you can have them both installed at the same time. Only other wireless devices online at that time were a couple of iPads and mobile phones.

None of which were downloading or streaming at the time. Those videos were ripped and encoded years ago before I knew what I was doing. They were originally being used with an old WDTV.

I have seen many posts where there were playback issues similar to yours, and switching to NFS fixed it, as it is far superior to SMB. Doesn't mean it is, the problem, but may be.

Things played fine, then my NAS would start downloading something, or the misses would be on Netflix with the other Shield, and my local streaming could go to crap.

And temporarily rename the com. Then rename it back to its original name after the new version of SPMC is installed. Saves loosing all your settings and scraped Library Metadata. Use a comparable Bluetooth remote on the C2 and it will still be faster, especially with eMMC flash ;-.

Stumbled onto this thread as I'm looking for a replacement for my WDTV Live box which has served me well and is still working ok but it's time to get something new. From what I have read the xiaomi would be a suitable replacement so all I need to know is the best place to buy from.

Also how applicable are the features here in AU. PS briefly looked at the nVidia Shield TV but it's pretty bloody expensive despite the want factor and, well, I only have a p TV but will consider 4K down the track when there is more content.

I should go over the the appropriate thread now!! Set it up last night and so far so good on a p tv. Everything seems to work well. Netflix and YouTube didn't want to update at first so had to manually find them and then update.

Netflix looked like crap prior to updating from the version it shipped with. Looks like they haven't updated the app since they launched it in April The Android version was updated much more recently in December.

Other than the crashing Android TV app on iPhone, no complaints so far. Casting is not working, but that's a known issue with my router. Known issue because it's one I've had for years with the Chromecast device, and it basically comes down to "If I reboot the router, Chromecast works".

Router works pretty well for everything else, so I've got no reason to upgrade yet. May upgrade to an AC based router at some stage though. Will explore getting a USB hub as suggested elsewhere to connect a flash drive, and one of those 2.

However when I connect the mi box up with the TV — p — super snappy performance, no flickering 4K resolution — still snappy but the TV flickers quite a bit. Not sure if this is known, as most places I've read say they had to side-load Chrome.

I've managed to install Chrome onto my Mi Box without side-loading. The UI doesn't really work with the remote though. I'm sure if I plugged in a keyboard and mouse everything will work.

Went to Chrome in the play store — https: I wasn't logged in yet, so logged into the play store. It then told me that it'd install it on there. I turned on the Mi Box and saw that it was downloading Chrome.

Post-download, it did not appear in the app list. Is there any way i can customise the launcher to at least show more than 3 of my apps in the launcher? Because it is not an Android TV app.

You can use Sideload Launcher to access it. I'm using the A2 Lite. Netflix doesn't work properly, it'll give me a "We can't provide these titles please try again later error" which results in the app crashing and restarting.

Plex has issues with playback whereby it freezes then plays at 2x speed which causes the audio to go out of whack. The other issue may be to do with HDCP 1. As a last resort reset the Mi Box to stock and start all over again.

That should not be happening with Netflix, especially the App crashing. Alternatively give TV App Repo a try. It packages non-tv apps with an app shortcut to make it appear on the standard launcher.

Also includes sideloadtag support built in. Have you tried to factory reset your box? A lot of people on other forums having issues with the Netflix app upfront with the mi box have found it works after a factory reset and app update.

So I bought from an Aus supplier I think on eBay. All looks legit, great looking little device, but having major wifi issues. I have two wifi networks available to connect to standard Cisco bigpond cable modem and a TPLink running ddwrt.

I get very limited connection on the Cisco, and Netflix only plays for a few seconds then says unable to play. Very frustrating, since dropping back to SD regularly on my chromecast was the main reason I decided to buy this device to replace it; now this won't even let me watch for more than a few seconds.

Firmware is up to date, I've reset it already, but no luck. Already wondering if I should try for a return or replacement. Not sure how I'm feeling about Xiaomi products right now.

I've bought multiple xiaomi products and each has had a share of problems 4 x fit bands, Bluetooth speakers x 2, and a phone that suddenly had screen failure - false screen inputs rendering it useless in less than 10 months.

Most of my library is 1gb MP4 so not hardware intensive. A little preemptive since I haven't played with wifi settings much yet, or tested different positions of the Mi Box in relation to wifi strength, but considering a lousy gen 1 Chromecast is outperforming a box which cost me 3 times as much, I'm pretty let down.

My Mi Box work in the back room of the house this way. Well, I've moved the unit to the main area where the routers are located. Still no luck at all. Took almost ten attempts for it to even connect to the Cisco connection, and still doesn't even see the TPLink at all.

Ran update on Netflix, plays for around ten seconds and then says can't play at this time. I really have no issue with my wifi like this on other devices 2 x android phones, iPhone and iPad, 2 x chromecast.

Surely I have a defective unit? From what little reviews that are out there, I got the impression the wifi was quite good on this box. I've made preliminary contact with seller to ask what solution they can offer.

Will report back if anyone is interested. Have you tried changing the channel to make sure it's US compatible — below 11 for 2. This to me points to HDCP2. Its an essential ingredient.

First step is to remove any HDCP 1. This is essential if connected to a 4K TV. Follow the steps in this post above and have a good look at what HDCP protection is saying.

I purchased from MoBase and let me tell you it was stressful to say the least but turned up on Friday and all good, just a 3 week wait. My main problem is my external hard drive a WD Elements 2GB unit, it sees it, but wont let me access it.

The other issue is, it is not detected by my Windows 7 computer in my Homegroup, my old media played for this room a WDTV unit no problem. But Netflix is still a no go. Plays a few seconds then NOPE.

But something I've discovered But as soon as I try to play an actual movie or show, it fails. So now this has me frustrated AND intrigued. I've tried updating Netflix, uninstalling and re-installing, sideloaded a previous version apk, all to no avail.

I also sideloaded the Netflix mobile apk but couldn't get past the intro screen due to no air mouse or similar to select anything. It's as if Netflix doesn't recognise that I have an account; it lets me play perfectly trailers, but no actual content.

Account settings are all correct as far as name and plan etc. I'm not smart enough to know what smart dns is lol. I'll google to figure it out. But is it something I should or shouldn't have done?

This is good reading for you: Otherwise you will likely get stuck with slow Android hardware inside the TV. Hardware that will quickly become obsolete. Much easier to upgrade an external media player than an Expensive TV.

Sony are slow and lag badly when it comes to major Android OS updates. They would rather you buy a new TV. I have 3 external hard drives plugged into my HTPC is it possible to plug these all into one of these?

I would not use a Mi Box as any sort of server. Number one reason is the Hard drives do not sleep when not in use ever. There is no complete power Off with the Mi Box. Its Suspend and Resume.

Which is why there is the HDD sleep problem. Not good for a server. Not suited as a serious server of any kind this device. I reckon my home 2. I've only ever used it for iPads and mobile phones so never really stressed it.

I also found, as mentioned in other posts, that the mi box doesn't like the higher channels for wifi. So right now I'm using my usb to ethernet adaptor until my new router arrives. To the issues I had with some video playback, the bluray rips play flawlessly through the ethernet connection, so issue was wifi related.

However it played back fine in MX player. I ended up ripping the DVDs again and encoding as H. We're not doing anything fancy, just basic playback over the network, plus Netflix, plus casting from the Stan app on our phone s.

Took me a few tries to find out how to rename the Cast receiver to something that I could say to Google Home, but that's sorted. We're not doing anything fancy, just basic playback over the network.

I do apologise for seeming being? However through testing, I've also had it connected to a 60" LG and a 55" Samsung, both of which are older models perhaps? I can't find anywhere to download and upgrade the firmware for the GVA at the moment.

A few forums skirt around the issue and say leave it in suspend mode but thats not for me. Just received my Mi Box today from Aliexpress, it came with a Euro plug power supply with an Australian converter and has a very short lead.

I would like to purchase an Australian power supply for it. I see generic power supplies with the same amperage and voltage but I do not know the correct plug size dimensions, maybe if anyone knows this I can do a search.

Nah not really, most Shield games and other specific things like Plex Server won't run on any other device. Some basic apps that don't rely on specific hardware will be fine though.

It doesn't hurt to try that installing it and see what works. On the Shield, you need to set your region to UK for it to show natively. The international version in the orange box. I'm hoping the official controller is around there somewhere as well as that would be a nice little addition for emulators and the odd Android game.

I'm pretty keen to see how Moonlight Streaming goes as well. Anyone had any luck with other controllers? I would imagine it's Bluetooth only in regards to controllers though?

In other news, the YouTube app is annoying the hell out of my family Which works wonderfully well. Problem is, afterwards it starts streaming the next "recommended video" and it's not easy to shut the thing up!

I ordered from geekbuying on the 14th of November. The AU plug is dodgy as, but it works. So far I love it: D It seems to work really well for what I use it for and the setup was a breeze. Great addition to the man cave.

I'm fairly sure I remember reading about some testing and reviews done with the Xiaomi via ethernet adapters and in all cases the wifi outperformed the USB ethernet. I can't remember the source and don't have time to hunt it down so you'd be best to search that out before making any purchasing decisions on the basis of this.

The BIG problem with Kodi or SPMC streaming is users that complain usually do not tweak the Video cache buffer which really is needed for reliable high bitrate streaming. Online streaming is not a good indicator of performance, there simply are too many variables.

Yes, it's in the settings notifications I think, you can turn them all off. If you mean the "Xiaomi Recommends" section, go into Settings — Apps — System Apps, scroll right to the end and open the settings for the app called XiaomiLeanbackCustomizer.

Has anyone had any luck installing Aria2 on the MiBox and using it as a torrent client with a USB hard disk connected as storage? Ideally I would like to use a Chrome Extension to open torrents on the laptop and queue them for download remotely onto Aria2 running on the MiBox.

Any further tips as to how to get the server set up and how to remotely queue torrents via the Aria2c extension? Or is there an easier way to do all this? I don't want to use my laptop as the media server, buy a NAS drive or copy p movies to the MiBox using a thumbdrive ;-.

Does anyone know if the steam link's power adapter with AU plug will work with the Mi Box? Just wondering since I have a steam link and don't really use it much so the power adapter might be handy since my Mi Box will not come with an AU plug.

Ah, you mean download locally for playback on the Mi? Got mine on Friday from MC-mart. Found my AC wifi without a problem. I know some of them can be sideloaded, but still a bit of a disappointment.

Managing the queue and so on is easier through casting from an Android phone with the app or your desktop I've found. I rarely use the Youtube app on its own, just cast.

My major gripe so far is the casting seems to "die" and I can't connect to the Mi Box 3 after a few days of being on in standby when not in use and I need to reboot the box. I was actually after one of these: Offered me the Orico instead at a good price.

On other devices the play movies app allows downloading, i dont see why it should be different on this device. Maybe it's an android TV thing. Google assume that you're at home with a fast internet connection.
